Boiler Explodes In Turkish Product Tanker En Route To Italy, 1 Dead

An engineer aboard the product tanker “MT TORC” lost his life on January 8 while the Turkish product tanker was travelling to Italy across the Mediterranean Sea due to a boiler explosion.

The incident concerning the MT TORC, which Besiktas Shipping, a Turkish business, is managing, is under investigation. On Monday at 1:05 PM GMT, an explosion occurred in the 13,200 dwt tanker’s engine room. “Mehmet Altas,” the second engineer, suffered fatal wounds and died before emergency medical assistance could reach the ship.

The vessel contacted the Republic of Turkiye, Ankara MRCC, and the Italian Port Authorities to arrange for medical evacuation following the accident. The Italian authorities had scheduled the dispatch of a medical helicopter, but upon discovering the engineer’s death, it was reportedly cancelled.

Following the explosion, the vessel continued to its planned destination of Genoa, where it is expected to reach on January 11. With 14 tanks and a length of 128 meters, the MT TORC was built in 2010 and is mainly used in the Black Sea and Mediterranean. Based on reports, the ship underwent inspection three times at the Selah Shipyard this past year, with the third investigation being an extended one in December last year. These checks found no problems or inadequacies.

The ship’s operator has announced preparations for additional investigation and expressed condolences for the tragic loss of a crew member. An international expert body will also be tasked with analyzing and determining the root cause of the explosion once the Italian police have finished the investigation.
